Massey sets sights on October bout

High Peak cruiserweight Jack Massey is fresh from a week out of the gym and is now turning his attentions to his second professional fight later this year.

Twenty-year old Massey shook off an early scare in his debut fight in Bolton last month to comfortably seal victory against veteran journeyman Jody Meikle.

He received a nasty cut just below his eye in the first round, but his corner team managed to deal with the problem before Massey went on to outclass his opponent and eventually clinch victory in the third round.

Since his outing Massey has been under strict instructions from his trainer Bobby Rimmer to have a week of rest and recuperation.

Now after a mini-break, the Chapel-en-le-Frith fighter has his second outing in the paid ranks to look forward to.

Massey is provisionally pencilled in to fight on a bill on October 12, again at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium.

Father David Massey says Jack is now back at work in the gym ready to follow up his maiden showing.

Prior to his debut, Rimmer said he saw comparisons between Massey and current British champion Brian Rose, another fighter he trains.

• Jack is still on the lookout for sponsorship. Anyone interested in doing so can contact David on 07968 291 598.

Chapel-en-le-Frith boxer Massey turns professional

High Peak boxer Jack Massey has his eyes firmly set on the big time after making the decision to turn professional.

The 20-year-old, from Chapel-en-le-Frith, is set to make his debut in the pro ranks with a debut fight at Bolton’s Reebok Stadium on July 20 against an as-yet unidentified opponent.

Dad David Massey said winning the ABA Elite Senior Championship’s 86kg cruiserweight division title earlier this year had spurred his son on to joining the professional ranks.

“I’m absolutely made-up for Jack, he’s worked really hard to get here,” David said.

“The morning that he signed, he got another call from the Great Britain squad inviting him to attend an assessment, but by then he had already made his mind up.”

Massey, who is now managed by VIP Promotions, has been taken under the wing of retired professional welterweight-turned-trainer Bobby Rimmer, a former Ricky Hatton cornerman.

Rimmer said: “From what I have seen, Jack is a very talented lad.

“I trained Brian Rose and what I saw in Brian seven years ago I can see in Jack.

“He’s a quality fighter who knows what he wants in boxing, and I think he is going to fit well in the professional ranks.

“Jack has got the potential to fulfil a lot of his dreams and ambitions in boxing, and I am under no illusions, at this point in time, that he could be a future British champion.”

• Jack is currently looking for sponsorship, and any interested parties should contact David on 07968 291 598.

Massey eyes top title at ABA Elite Championships

A trio of wins secured Chapel-en-le-Frith fighter Jack Massey his place in this weekend’s televised ABA Elite Boxing Championship finals.

Massey will face Southern Counties’ Chris Billamm-Smith at the Rainton Meadows Arena in Sunderland on Saturday.

Massey secured his place in the final, which is to be shown on the Box Nation channel, after impressive wins in his previous three outings, starting in the pre-quarter final stage against Yorkshire boxer Nicolie Campbell.

The Chapel fighter rarely had to move out of first gear in this bout, catching Campbell with scoring shots at will on his way to a unanimous victory.

A week later, Massey was pitted against Army boxer Christian Flynn. Massey started the stronger, hitting Flynn with hurtful headshots and whipping in hooks to the body. One such hook dropped his opponent to the canvas for an eight-count.

The second round started much the same until Massey caught Flynn with a left-hook which seemed to take his feet off the canvas. Flynn rose at the count, only for the referee to intervene.

Next up for Massey at Everton Sports Centre on April 7 was North East boxer Michael Watson in the semi-finals. Watson started the brighter, catching Massey with point-scoring jabs.

Massey came out in the second round with a different tactic, attacking Watson on the ropes and mixing his shots from body to the head.

The third round was much the same with Massey keeping the pressure on, eventually running out a clear winner with four of the five judges scoring in favour of the Chapel winner.
